Things to do in Aberdeen

Explore the sparkling ‘Granite City’

Aberdeen is a city built on maritime industry, where shipbuilding and fishing is prominent to this day. It’s nicknamed ‘Granite City’ thanks to its distinct architecture that uses locally quarried grey granite stone. The buildings tend to ‘sparkle’ in the sun, due to small mineral particles reflecting the light, making the historical buildings appear even more beautiful during sunny days. If you take your rental to the city, park in one of the many long stay car parks like NCP Shiprow and go for a stroll around the city’s beautiful streets and beachfront. Visit the maritime museum to delve deeper into the history of Aberdeen and its port, or just to see the incredible oilrig model. From there, you can walk to the historical fishing village of Footdee and see the original fisherman cottages, then continue onto the Esplanade to see Aberdeen’s beach and maybe have a chance of seeing Bottlenose dolphins. You have to visit Old Aberdeen for a peaceful walk through Seaton Park and Aberdeen University’s historical King’s College grounds.

Climb atop a Munro in the Cairngorms

The Granite City is also a perfect place to start road trips around the region. With the Cairngorms National Park a short two hour drive away, you can experience some of the highest ‘Munros’ in Aberdeenshire and Moray – Scottish mountains with a height over 3,000 feet. The Cairngorms National Park is filled with unique wildlife, rivers, lochs and hiking paths. For those who love wildlife, the Cairngorms are a great place to see the endangered Capercaillies and Scottish Wildcats – but only if you’re lucky enough, as they try avoid human contact.

Taste the world’s finest Whiskeys in historical distilleries

For those into the golden Scottish spirit, the Cairngorms are home to plenty of Whiskey distilleries, such as Dalwhinnie Distillery or Royal Lochnagar Distillery. If you take the A96 from Aberdeen to the northwest, you can visit the two famous distilleries of Glenfiddich and The Macallan Estate – just make sure you have a designated driver as you definitely will do the tasting session. By renting a car with Enterprise, you’re opening the door to making great memories and experiencing the unique things Aberdeen and its surroundings have to offer. Get a quote above and experience the Scottish regions of Aberdeenshire and Moray in a comfortable Enterprise rental car.

Driving Information in Aberdeen

When driving around Aberdeen and the surrounding area, there a few key things to remember:

  • Aberdeen uses standard UK speed limits. Most built-up area roads will have a 30mph limit with some 20mph limit zones. Single and dual carriageways are also aligned with standard national speed limits, unless specified otherwise on road signs.
  • The AWPR or Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (A90) is a great way to dodge Aberdeen roads during peak hours when going to the airport.
  • If you decide to venture out of the city into the countryside, make sure you’re aware of animal warning signs. Reduce speed and use the car’s full beams at night, but make sure to turn them off if you see an animal to prevent them from getting dazzled.
  • During snowy weather, reduce your speed accordingly and try losing road speed earlier than usual as Aberdeen roads can freeze-over.
  • In an emergency, dial 999 or 112 on mobiles.
