What to do and see in Eindhoven

Eindhoven has a thriving tourist industry thanks to its numerous museums and other attractions. Like most Dutch cities, it boasts a fabulous art gallery, the Van Abbemuseum. Art lovers can easily spend a full day wandering its halls without getting bored, but even if you're not an expert, you'll still be impressed by the works of masters like Picasso, Mondrian and Kandinsky.

Driving in Eindhoven

Like most Dutch cities, Eindhoven is home to far more cyclists than motorists. You will often see a separate bike lane, but that's not always the case, and you will inevitably have to share the road with bicycles during your stay. When driving here, be sure to watch out for them. Dutch traffic laws favor cyclists. You will need to yield to bicycles at stop signs. If you park on the street, double-check before opening the door and getting out, as there might be a cyclist whizzing along the street.

Parking in downtown Eindhoven can be expensive, with the rates increasing the closer you are to the action. In multilevel parking garages, there are parking permit machines like you will find in other countries. However, when parking on the street, you can pay using a mobile app. You will have to enter your car's registration number into the app, and there is no need to print a pay-and-display ticket. There are several benefits to paying this way: you don't need to walk between the meter and the car, and you'll pay your fee after you return to your car. This means that you will pay per minute and be charged for the time you have actually spent. There's no need to estimate time in advance or to hurry back because you're worried about the meter running out. Parking systems like this can be found across the Netherlands.

If you would rather save money and avoid paying for parking, there is a park-and-ride area in Eindhoven South. Here, you can park for free, then take a bus to the downtown area. There are some other park-and-ride areas on the outskirts of the city, although some charge a fee for parking. The fees are always far lower than downtown.

The Netherlands is notable for its low-speed limits, particularly on freeways. From 6:00 am to 7:00 pm, the freeway speed limit is 100 km/h. You may be surprised to find that many Dutch drivers stay under the speed limit. This is the country that invented the speed camera, and there is a very strong emphasis on road safety. Drivers' speed is monitored very closely, with a network of cameras all over the country.
