Nancy Car Rental

Enterprise Car Rental Locations in Nancy

There have been human settlements in the area around Nancy for over two thousand years. It was in A.D. 1050 that a wooden fort, later to become a fortified city ringed by stone walls, was built, and Nancy became the capital of the province of Lorraine. Under the exiled king of Poland, Stanislas Leszczynski, the city began to redefine itself both architecturally and culturally, the culmination of which was the construction of the enormous Stanislas Square. Throughout its history, Nancy remained French until the Nazis occupied it during World War II, then it was liberated by US forces in 1944. Today, Nancy is home to the University of Lorraine, a key contributor to its economy. Nancy has an oceanic climate; the average summer temperature is in the region of 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and in winter it rarely falls below 40F. The city has a railway station with high-speed links to Paris, Metz and Lyon. Details of Enterprise Rent-A-Car can be found by following the link Nancy.

Attractions in Nancy

Stanislas Square, with its brickwork laid to form a diagonal cross, is a difficult venue to miss because of its size, fountains, ornamental wrought iron gates and of course, in the middle, a statue of Stanislas himself. Remains of the fortifications can still be seen in Nancy today, including the 14th-century Porte de la Craffe gate, with its fairy tale twin towers. There are several parks in the city, providing an opportunity for visitors to get away from the crowds for a while. Park de Pepiniere has a small petting zoo, bars and a concert area. Nancy is home to many museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Natural History Museum and aquarium.

Places to Visit Outside Nancy

The two obvious place to visit while staying in Nancy are Metz and Luxembourg city, 35 and 73 miles away respectively. Luxembourg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, due mainly to its sturdy fortifications. The cathedral of Notre Dame was built in the Gothic revivalist style, with the first stone laid in 1613. Further enhancements were carried out on the cathedral in the 1930s. The Grand Ducal Palace is a magnificent building, still used by the Grand Duke for state occasions. Metz is another fortified place where the legacy left by its military history can still be seen today in the remains of its defensive walls; a 13th-century bridge castle and buildings that were once barracks that have been regenerated as residential accommodation. Metz has innumerable churches, not least the cathedral of St Stephen. It also has a branch of the Pompidou Centre, displaying modern art.

Parking and Traffic Information in Nancy

Nancy is an important traffic hub close to the A31 running north to south, and the A33/D400 out east to the German border. Driving on the motorways and major roads in Lorraine is unproblematic. However, Nancy has narrow streets that soon get congested. The council is trying to reduce traffic in the city centre by introducing pedestrianized zones and one-way systems. Parking on the street is virtually impossible, so motorists are encouraged to use the underground facilities or better still, the several park and ride schemes in operation.
