Driving in Adelaide

Driving in and around the city is both quick and easy in Australia, making rental cars in Adelaide perfectly viable for visitors to the region. The city's road system includes a total of three expressways, along with a freeway and a highway, allowing for rapid movement in Adelaide and beyond.

The South Eastern Freeway (route M1) was the first freeway in Australia, and it remains the longest in the country. It connects the Adelaide Plain to the Adelaide Hills. The freeway turns into National Highway 1 and can be used to access the city of Melbourne. To circumvent the traffic congestion that is common on Main South Road (routes A13 and B23), you can take the Southern Expressway (route M2), a 12-mile expressway that stretches along the south of the city.

The North-South freeway (route M2) was designed to serve as the main north-to-south roadway, replacing the adjacent South Road (route A2). The Port River Expressway connects Port Adelaide and the LeFevre Peninsula, while the Northern Expressway provides a fast route between the north of Adelaide and the town of Gawler.

For those interested in renting a car in Adelaide, it is worth noting that vehicles drive on the left side of the road in Australia. Speed limits in the city are also strongly enforced using radar cameras and should be obeyed at all times. Traffic congestion peaks between 7:30 am and 9:00 am and from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm, so it's best to plan your commutes around these times if you wish to avoid driving during rush hour.

Parking in the city is plentiful, and there are more than 40,000 parking spaces in total. This includes short-term parking spaces and long-stay parking lots, as well as park-and-ride bus services. Parking lots are spread across the city, and parking is widely available nearby the main retail hubs and central business district.

In terms of pedestrian activity, as a general rule, zones around schools have a strict 25km/h speed limit within 200 meters of a school. However, to keep traffic moving at a reasonable pace, this speed limit is not enforced within the central business district. All of the low-speed zones in Adelaide are clearly marked with zig-zag lines on the road.
